Adult Learn-to-Row Program

Learning to row is a one-of-a-kind experience appropriate for anyone who is over the age of 18 and reasonably fit. You and your classmates will learn the basics of sculling (rowing) an 8-person or 4-person rowing shell. You will learn to row on the Susquehanna River, which has been described as world-class rowing water. You will learn the fundamentals of rowing from highly skilled but easy-going coaches who want to share their sport with you.

The class will run Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 6pm–8pm beginning on Monday, May 14 and ending on Thursday, June 14, for a total of 15 sessions.

The first two sessions, May 14 and 15, will be on land so that participants can learn about safety, the rowing stroke, and boat handling. These two sessions are mandatory (though if you have a conflict you may contact Quica or Dagny, the Learn To Row coordinators, info@rowpa.org)

The remaining 13 sessions are on the water, weather permitting. To complete the program, you must attend 3 or more of the remaining sessions, for a total of at least 5 sessions. Participants are stongly encouraged to attend as many sessions as possible.

Once the Learn To Row program has ended, participants who have met the minimum attendance requirements can then row with the club members for the remainder of the rowing season, which ends on September 21, 2018. The club offers coached rows on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 6pm–8pm.

The fee for Learn To Row is $200 per person (plus $9.75 admin fee to pay for club US Rowing Liability Insurance - see below).  This fee covers 15 days of coaching dedicated to teaching you to row and the chance to row with the club for free for the remainder of the season – a full three months. The Learn To Row fee is less than half of the normal yearly membership fee for the Central Pennsylvania Rowing Association.

Each participant must pass a swim test prior to the beginning of the Learn To Row class or sign a waiver indicating that you are able to pass the swim test. Once you are signed up, a welcome email with all the details will be sent to you.

US Rowing Waiver

CPRA is a member of US Rowing, an umbrella organization for rowing clubs nationwide. US Rowing requires our club to have each member submit an electronic waiver of liability through the US Rowing website. In order to complete the online waiver, please go to https://membership.usrowing.org.  After entering the site, you may need to register and produce a profile and will then be prompted to sign the waiver. At the completion of the waiver process, you will be given a unique USRowing number, which verifies to us that you have signed the appropriate waiver. Please provide us with your US Rowing number given to you during this online process.  There is a $9.75 administrative fee for the basic membership.

Go to the US Rowing Website:  https://membership.usrowing.org

Under “Individuals”.  Click on "Join"

The Club or Team Name is  “Central Pennsylvania Rowing Association” and the Club Code is SFDUM.

Membership Type is “Basic Membership – Free (Admin Fee $9.75)” and no Upgrade needs to be selected. Continue and update Profile as Necessary. You will then be asked to pay the Admin Fee.
