Registration is now closed for 2019
CPRA offers opportunities for youth ages 12-18 years to learn about the sport of rowing. Most youth participants are local (Northumberland, Snyder, Union, Columbia, Montour, Lycoming counties), however everyone is welcome! If you would like make the drive, we would love to have you!
The summer program will consist of a two-week Learn-To-Row (LTR) class for those who are new to rowing. This program introduces the fundamentals of rowing in a co-ed setting for youth. Graduates of the Youth LTR program can continue with the experienced rowing program, for an additional four weeks, culminating in the Philadelphia Youth Regatta.
It's the perfect opportunity for anyone looking to try a new sport or looking for a fun way to stay in shape this summer. Rowing is a great low-impact, aerobic workout. It strengthens skills like coordination, mental acuity, endurance, and reaction speed.
Program Goals are:
To expose youth (12 -18 years) to the sport of rowing
To build rowing, racing, and teamwork skills of young rowers with previous experience
To prepare participants to compete at a regatta.
NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. Beginners will experience sculling (each hand has one oar) in eight-person shells called octuples. This is a one of a kind experience with an experienced youth and collegiate rowing coach. The session begins with on-the-land instruction regarding the rowing stroke, equipment, and commands. The majority of the time will be spent on-the-water in which new rowers are fully engaged in learning the technique and execution of the rowing stroke, rowing commands, boat handling, and the intricacies of crew dynamics. Participants in the session are expected to complete the entire two weeks and can choose to continue in the Experienced Rowing Program following LTR.
The Youth Learn-to-Row session will be offered June 10 - June 21, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. -10:00 a.m.
The Youth LTR program is Free to participants (subsidized with grant and organizational funding).
